Rapunzel brought a breath of fresh air to the Disney princesses: a strong-willed heroine who wants to step out of her gilded cage to see the world, and the lanterns she has been dreaming of forever. She is passionate about so many different things, and I see a lot of myself in that overflowing curiosity.
Tangled, Disney
Rapunzel.
Stepping out of the tower to explore the world
Construction
Everything by hand
The Disney illustrations are full of details on her dress, which makes staying faithful a real challenge. I wanted to recreate her costume the way she would have made it: entirely by hand, as if to pass the time. The floral motifs on the corset and on the front of the skirt are brushed on with textile paint. The embroidery is done by hand to add relief and give it that slightly imperfect feel. The cut of the corset, quite particular, looks as though she pieced it together from scraps of fabric.
