I really loved the Final Fantasy XIII universe — so much that I had already cosplayed Serah in her XIII version. When XIII-2 was announced, the new design drew me in straight away, with plenty of technical challenges thrown in as a bonus.
Final Fantasy XIII-2
Serah Farron.
Travelling through time to find her sister.
The weapon
Wood spine, expanding foam volume.
I cut a wood plank to the dimensions of the blade — it serves as the rigid spine along the length. On that structure, I sculpted the volume with expanding foam. Once the volume was right, I sanded then applied a smoothing filler before painting in acrylic, in successive coats, finished with a varnish.
Ornaments
Baked polymer clay, cut foam.
The ornaments and the jewellery on the outfit are modelled in polymer clay. For the larger volumes, where baked clay would be too heavy to hold on the fabric, I switched to foam that I cut and then painted.
Publication
The costume was featured in Wired, Italian edition issue 46 (December 2012), illustrating a feature on Final Fantasy.
